Almost one hundred years ago, on February 11th 1929, a treaty was signed in the Lateran Palace (Palazzo del Laterano), which gave birth to the Vatican City State (Stato della Città del Vaticano), the smallest (in terms of both size and population) sovereign state in the world. The Lateran Treaty as it came to be known, which became effective on June 7th 1929, was signed by Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, on behalf of King Victor Emmanuel III (r. 1900-46), and by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri for Pope Pius XI (r. 1922-39). The Vatican City State covers an area of roughly 110 acres and has a population of about 800. Comments are closed.
