The small 17th century church of San Giacomo alla Lungara is home to what must be the most overlooked work by the great Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) in the whole of Rome. Bernini's funerary monument to Ippolito Merenda takes the form of a winged skeleton clutching a crumpled sheet with its hands and teeth. The sheet sports the epigraph to the deceased.
