On August 19th 14 CE, Rome's first, and longest-reigning, emperor died, just a few weeks short of his seventy-sixth birthday. Did fate decree that Augustus should die in the month that bears his name (or rather the title that was conferred on him). In the Roman calendar the month was originally called Sextilis, but in 8 BCE it was renamed in his honour. The emperor's ashes were interred in the monumental mausoleum he had built for himself and his family in the Campus Martius. Comments are closed.
