On April 29th 1768, the Florentine sculptor Filippo della Valle (b. 1698) died in Rome. Initially apprenticed with his uncle Giovanni Battista Foggini, Filippo della Valle later moved to Rome to work with Camillo Rusconi. There, he worked on the Fontana di Trevi, where he completed the allegorical statues of Health and Abundance. Della Valle's masterpiece is, perhaps, his colossal bas-relief of The Annunciation (1750) for the church of Sant' Ignazio di Loyola. Comments are closed.
