Ottorino Respighi & the Pines of Rome

On April 18th 1936, the composer Ottorino Respighi (b. 1879) died in Rome. Respighi was born in Bologna, but moved to Rome in 1913. 

He noted that the city's 'marvellous fountains' and 'umbrella-like pines that appear in every part of the horizon' were two characteristics that spoke to his 'imagination above all',  inspiring him to write the tone poems: Le Fontane di Roma (1916) and I Pini di Roma (1924).
