A large marble tablet in St Peter's Basilica lists the names all the popes who have been interred in the church. Of a total of 266 popes, 148 are listed here.
However, several of the popes on the list were later moved to other churches: Eugenius IV to San Salvatore in Lauro, Callistus III and Alexander VI to Santa Maria in Monserrato, and Pius II and Pius III to Sant' Andrea della Valle.
The tablet is entitled SVMMI PONTIFICES IN HAC BASILICA SEPVLTI and is crowned with a bronze image of St Peter, by tradition the first pope, with the the papal tiara and crossed keys.
