A large marble tablet in St Peter's Basilica lists the names all the popes who have been interred in the church. Of a total of 266 popes, 148 are listed here.
However, several of the popes on the list were later moved to other churches: Eugenius IV (r. 1431-48) to San Salvatore in Lauro, Callixtus III (r. 1455-58) and Alexander VI (r. 1492-1503) to Santa Maria in Monserrato, and Pius II (r. 1458-64) and Pius III (r. 1503) to Sant' Andrea della Valle.
The tablet, which is entitled SVMMI PONTIFICES IN HAC BASILICA SEPVLTI, is crowned with a bronze image of St Peter, by tradition the first pope, with the the papal tiara and crossed keys.
