On April 9th 193, Lucius Septimius Severus, the governor of Upper Panonnia, was acclaimed emperor by his legions. Septimius Severus was the final contender to seize power after the assassination of the emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax on March 28th, in what came to be known as the Year of the Five Emperors. After deposing and killing the incumbent emperor Marcus Didius Julianus, Severus fought and defeated his rival claimants, Gaius Pescennius Niger and Decimus Clodius Albinus. Comments are closed.
