Porta Esquilina is one of the original gates of the Servian Wall, which was built in the fourth century BCE. Porta Esquilina was rebuilt during the reign of the emperor Augustus (r. 27 BCE - 14 CE) and rededicated in 262 as the Arch of Gallienus. Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus ruled as emperor with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and alone from 260 to 268.
